American Suzuki Motor Corporation is recalling approximately 4,700 Suzuki "Eiger" LT-A400K2 and LT-A400FK2 all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). These models, available in two and four-wheel drive configurations, were sold by Suzuki dealers nationwide from September through mid-October 2001 for between $4,400 and $5,200. The ATVs are identified by "Suzuki" and "Eiger" markings on the bodywork and are available in red and green.
The recall is due to an internal manufacturing flaw that could cause the crankshaft to break during operation. If the crankshaft breaks, power transfer from the engine to the transmission and drive wheels is interrupted, leaving the driver stranded. Suzuki has reported four incidents where the crankshaft broke, but no accidents or injuries have been reported.
Consumers should contact their local Suzuki dealer to schedule an inspection and repair. Suzuki will replace the unit with a new one if brought in by January 31, 2002; after that date, a free inspection and repair will be offered.
