CPSC Recalls Hiker Exercise Equipment Due to Fire and Burn Risk
ICON Health & Fitness is recalling about 7,500 Hiker exercise machines because an electrical component can fail, causing overheating, fire, and burns.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk of fire and burns, which are significant injuries, but the source explicitly states that no injuries have been reported, fitting the High severity criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
ICON Health & Fitness is recalling approximately 7,500 Hiker exercise machines, which are shortened-platform treadmills. The recall includes the NordicTrack Adventurer (model numbers NTHK9990 or 831.29897), the NordicTrack Teton (model number NTHK2249), and the ProForm TrailRunner (model number PFHK9990). These units were sold nationwide at sporting goods and department stores from April 2000 through December 2001 for up to $2,300.
The recall is being issued because an electrical component in the control system at the base of the unit can fail and cause overheating. This poses a risk of fire and burns to consumers. ICON has received 14 reports of the machines smoking and plastic pieces melting, but there have been no reports of injuries.
Consumers should stop using and unplug the recalled hikers immediately. They should contact ICON Health & Fitness at (800) 999-3756 between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. MT Monday through Friday to receive a free repair kit or to arrange for a free service call. Hikers with a sticker reading "KIT" located near the model number label have already been repaired.
