Dynacraft is recalling about 24,800 Vertical XL2 and Magna Electroshock mountain bikes sold at Target because improperly welded front suspension forks can break, causing injury.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect in the front suspension forks that can break during use, and the source explicitly reports 23 injuries including concussions and fractures, meeting the criteria for significant injury reports.

Plain-English summary

Dynacraft Industries Inc. is recalling approximately 24,800 Vertical XL2 and Magna Electroshock mountain bikes sold at Target stores nationwide. The recall involves 26-inch Vertical XL2 bikes (model 8526-26) and 24-inch and 26-inch Magna Electroshock bikes (models 8504-90, 8504-96, 8548-78, or 8548-94). These bicycles were manufactured in China between July 1999 and October 1999 and sold for between $100 and $140. The Vertical XL2 bikes were sold from August 1999 through February 2000, while the Magna Electroshock bikes were sold from August 1999 through August 2000. This recall expands a previous announcement from earlier in 2000 that covered about 19,000 Vertical XL2 bikes manufactured the week of October 11, 1999.

The hazard exists because some of the front suspension forks were not welded properly. During use, these forks can break apart, resulting in serious injury to the rider. Dynacraft is aware of 23 reports of injury to riders when the forks broke. Reported injuries include concussions, fractures, cuts, bruises, back strain, and chipped or lost teeth.

Consumers should stop riding these bikes immediately. They should take the bicycles to the Target store where they were purchased to receive a choice of a free replacement fork or a free replacement bicycle of equal value. Consumers can also call Dynacraft Industries Inc. at (800) 551-0032 between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. PT, Monday through Friday, for more information or to receive a free replacement fork by mail. Bicycles with a label reading "Fork made Jan., 2000" or "Fork made July 2000" at the bottom of the fork are not subject to this recall.
