What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (overheating/melting projector) where injury has been reported (minor burn), but no serious injuries or deaths are documented, fitting the 'High' criteria for risk-of-harm products with reported injury.

Plain-English summary

Toymax Inc. is recalling approximately 435,000 Arcadia Electronic Skeet Shoot game cartridges. The recall covers the Duck Shoot and Deer Hunter game sets, which include a toy pump-action rifle and a projector. The specific hazard involves the game cartridges, which can be defective and cause the projector to overheat, melt, and smoke. This malfunction presents a risk of burns to consumers.

Toymax has received 100 reports of projectors overheating, melting, and smoking. One consumer reportedly suffered a minor burn injury on the hand. Additionally, property damage was reported, including two scorched carpets and one scorched bedspread. The affected games were sold at toy and discount department stores nationwide, including Toys R Us, Sam's Club, KB Toys, and Costco, from October 1998 through March 2000 for about $65. The games were manufactured in China.

Consumers should stop using these games immediately and remove the game cartridge from the console. To receive a free replacement game cartridge, consumers should contact JAKKS Pacific, Inc., which bought out Toymax. Consumers should not return the games or cartridges to stores. New and replacement game cartridges are orange; all Arcadia Electronic Skeet Shoot game cartridges that are not orange should be replaced.
