What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a choking hazard for babies, which is a risk-of-harm product where injury has not yet been reported, fitting the High severity criteria.

Plain-English summary

Russ Berrie & Co. Inc. is recalling approximately 13,400 Precious Keepsakes™ silver-plated "New Baby" rattles. The product is a 6-inch rattle featuring a spinning ball on an ornate handle with a small bear and bow, sold as item number 10399. A silver tag attached to the rattle reads "NEW BABY."

The recall was issued because the shape and size of the rattle's handle allow it to become lodged in the throats of babies, creating a choking hazard. The product violates the Federal Hazardous Substances Act regarding the design and construction of baby rattles. CPSC and Russ Berrie are not aware of any incidents or injuries involving these items.

The rattles were sold nationwide in specialty and drug stores, as well as flower and gift shops, from November 1998 through December 1999 for about $14. Consumers should take these rattles away from babies immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a refund.
