What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (missing guardrails) where injury has not yet been reported for the specific units, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for theoretical or unreported harm.
Plain-English summary
Northern Bedroom's Inc. of Oxford, Maine, is recalling approximately 2,800 wooden bunk beds. The recalled beds are made of Northern White Ash with natural, cherry, honey, or golden finishes and were sold under the model names Prestige, Spindle, and Cottage. There is no identifying information on the beds.
The recall is due to a safety hazard where the top bunk does not have guardrails on both sides. This design flaw creates a risk that a child could fall or become entrapped between the wall and the mattress. While CPSC is not aware of any deaths associated with these specific recalled beds, the agency has received reports of seven children who died from becoming entrapped in upper bunks of bunk beds without guardrails since 1990.
The beds were sold at furniture and specialty bedroom stores throughout the New England states from May 1995 through February 1998 for approximately $300 to $550. Consumers should stop using the recalled beds immediately and email the company at [email protected] to receive free guardrails for the top bunk.
