Plain-English summary
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a public health alert for Weis Markets’ ready-to-eat General Tso Chicken meals. The alert was issued because the products may contain milk, a known allergen, which is not declared on the finished product labels. The affected items were prepared, labeled, and sold in the deli areas of Weis Markets stores between April 13, 2022, and May 11, 2022. The products have sell-by dates ranging from April 13, 2022, through May 15, 2022.
The issue was identified when Weis Markets in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, reported that they had used correctly labeled, USDA-inspected chicken products containing milk ingredients but failed to update their in-store labels to reflect this. The affected products were sold at Weis Markets retail delis in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. The specific items subject to the alert are deli compartment containers labeled as “Weis GENERAL TSO CHICKEN FAMILY MEAL,” “Weis GENERAL TSO CHICKEN SMALL MEAL,” and “Weis GENERAL TSO MEAL.”
There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to the consumption of these products. FSIS has verified that the affected products are no longer available for sale but notes that some may still be in consumers’ refrigerators. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them and should throw them away or return them to the place of purchase. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.
