Plain-English summary

Barber Foods, a Portland, Maine establishment, is recalling approximately 1,707,494 pounds of frozen, raw stuffed chicken products that may be contaminated with Salmonella Enteritidis. The recall was expanded on July 12, 2015, to include all products associated with contaminated source material produced between February 17, 2015, and May 20, 2015. The specific product subject to recall is the 2-lb. 4-oz. cardboard box containing 6 individually pouched pieces of BARBER FOODS PREMIUM ENTREES BREADED-BONELESS RAW STUFFED CHICKEN BREASTS WITH RIB MEAT KIEV. These products bear the establishment number P-276 inside the USDA mark of inspection and were shipped to retail locations nationwide.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) was notified of a cluster of Salmonella Enteritidis illnesses on June 24, 2015. Working with state health departments and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, FSIS determined a link between the Barber Foods products and the illness cluster. Six case-patients have been identified in Minnesota and Wisconsin with illness onset dates ranging from April 5, 2015, to June 23, 2015. Since the original recall on July 2, 2015, two more case-patients were identified, prompting the expansion of the recall scope.

Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, which typically results in diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after exposure. While most people recover without treatment, older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe illness. FSIS advises consumers to treat these products as raw chicken, ensuring they are cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F. Consumers should clean hands and surfaces after contact with the raw product and keep it away from other foods. Consumers with questions can contact the company at (844) 564-5555 or the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-674-6854.
