2026 Tesla Model Y: Reverse Lights May Fail to Illuminate

Tesla is recalling certain 2026 Model Y vehicles because the reverse lights may fail to illuminate due to a wiring defect, which could reduce visibility when backing and increase crash risk.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This is a risk-of-harm vehicle safety defect—the wiring defect causes reverse lights to fail, reducing visibility when backing and increasing crash risk. However, no injuries, deaths, or property damage have been reported. The rubric caps unmanifested harms at severity score 3 when no actual injuries are documented.

Plain-English summary

Tesla is recalling certain 2026 Model Y vehicles due to a wiring defect in the reverse light circuit. The reverse lights may fail to illuminate while the vehicle is in reverse.

When reverse lights do not illuminate, other drivers and pedestrians may not be aware that the vehicle is backing up. This reduces visibility and increases the risk of a crash. The vehicles fail to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 108, which governs lamps and reflective devices.

Approximately 260 vehicles are affected. Tesla owner notification letters were mailed on November 26, 2025. Tesla Service will replace the reverse lights and reverse facia harness at no cost. Owners should contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752 or reference Tesla's internal recall number SB-25-17-011.
