BMW and Toyota Supra starter relays can corrode and short circuit
BMW is recalling certain 2019-2022 BMW models and the Toyota Supra because the engine starter relay may corrode, overheat and short circuit. Owners are told to park outside until repaired.
NHTSA safety advisory
Park this vehicle outside
NHTSA advises parking it away from buildings and other vehicles until the repair is done — the risk exists even when the vehicle is switched off.
This is the agency’s own advisory, not our assessment. Contact the manufacturer or a dealer, and see the official NHTSA notice for the current guidance.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: Rubric level 3 covers risk-of-harm where injury has not yet been reported: a corroded relay presents a fire hazard without affecting control or propulsion, and no fires or injuries are recorded.
