Tesla Models 3, S, X, Y hood latch assembly defect

Tesla is recalling 2020-2024 Model Y and 2021-2024 Model 3, S, and X vehicles for a hood latch defect that can fail to secure the hood. An open hood obstructs driver view and increases crash risk.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This recall is rated High (Score 3) because it represents a risk-of-harm product where injury has not yet been reported. The hood latch defect could cause vision obstruction and increase crash risk, but the source documents no deaths, hospitalizations, or reported injuries.

Plain-English summary

Tesla, Inc. is recalling certain 2020-2024 Model Y, 2021-2024 Model 3, Model S, and Model X vehicles. The hood latch assembly in these vehicles may fail to detect an unlatched hood condition after the hood has been opened.

As a result of this defect, an unlatched hood can fully open during vehicle operation. An open hood obstructs the driver's view and increases the risk of a crash.

Tesla has released a free over-the-air (OTA) software update to remedy this issue. Owner notification letters were mailed on September 24, 2024.
