Volkswagen is recalling 261,257 Audi and Volkswagen vehicles because a fuel tank seal defect may cause fuel to leak, increasing fire risk.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a fuel leak that increases the risk of a fire, which aligns with the rubric criterion for 'significant injury/property-damage reports' or structural vehicle defects involving fire hazards.
Plain-English summary
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. is recalling 261,257 front-wheel drive vehicles, including 2015-2020 Audi A3 Sedan and Cabriolet, 2019-2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI, 2015-2020 Golf GTI, 2015-2020 Golf A7, and 2015-2019 Golf Sportwagen models. The recall addresses a defect in the suction jet pump seal inside the fuel tank.
Due to this seal problem, fuel may flow into the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system and potentially leak out of the charcoal canister. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire. This recall expands and replaces previous recall number 16V-647, meaning vehicles previously recalled under that number will need the new remedy completed.
Dealers will replace the suction pump free of charge. Final owner notification letters for Audi owners were mailed on July 25, 2024, and for Volkswagen owners on August 13, 2024. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 or Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline is available at 1-888-327-4236.
