Volkswagen and Audi Recall 2015-2016 Models for Fuel Leak Fire Risk

Volkswagen is recalling 2015-2016 Golf, GTI, and Audi A3 vehicles because a faulty fuel pump may cause leaks that increase fire risk.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a fuel leak that increases the risk of a fire, which meets the rubric criteria for 'significant injury/property-damage reports' or structural vehicle defects involving fire hazards.

Plain-English summary

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Volkswagen Golf, Golf SportWagen, GTI, Audi A3 sedan, and A3 Cabriolet vehicles. The recall involves 110,042 vehicles affected by a defect in the suction pump inside the fuel tank.

Due to the problem with the suction pump, fuel may flow into the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system. As fuel accumulates in the EVAP system, it may leak out through the charcoal canister filter element. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the suction pump free of charge. The recall began in November 2016. Note that this recall has been fully superseded by recall 24V-110. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 or Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834.
