Ford vehicles recalled for oil pump belt failure and power braking loss
Certain 2016-2018 Ford Focus and 2018-2022 Ford EcoSport vehicles may have faulty oil pump drive belts or tensioners that can fail, causing engine stall and loss of power braking assist, increasing crash risk.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a structural vehicle defect affecting a critical safety system. Failure of the oil pump belt can cause engine stall and loss of power braking assist, directly increasing crash risk. Although no injuries have been reported, the severity of potential consequences—loss of a core safety system—meets the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Ford is recalling certain 2016-2018 Ford Focus and 2018-2022 Ford EcoSport vehicles due to potential failure of the oil pump drive belt or drive belt tensioner.
A failure of the oil pump belt or tensioner can result in loss of engine oil pressure. This loss of pressure can cause the engine to stall and disable power braking assist, increasing the risk of a crash.
Affected owners were notified by mail on August 11, 2025. Dealers will replace the oil pump tensioner assembly and oil pump drive belt at no cost. If engine failure has already occurred, Ford will replace the engine assembly as an interim repair at no cost. Owners should contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
