Tesla Model Y Autosteer Recall: Software Update for Control Prominence
Tesla is recalling 2.03 million 2012-2023 Model S/X/3/Y vehicles with Autosteer due to insufficient control prominence that may allow driver misuse and crash risk. A free OTA software update will be provided.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This recall addresses insufficient control prominence in Autosteer (SAE Level 2 ADAS) that could lead to driver misuse. No crashes, injuries, or deaths have been reported to date. Per the rubric, a risk-of-harm product without reported harm scores as High (3).
Plain-English summary
Tesla is recalling 2,031,220 vehicles across multiple model years: 2012-2023 Model S, 2016-2023 Model X, 2017-2023 Model 3, and 2020-2023 Model Y. The recall affects vehicles equipped with Autosteer, Tesla's SAE Level 2 advanced driver-assistance system.
In certain circumstances when Autosteer is engaged, the prominence and scope of the feature's controls may not be sufficient to prevent driver misuse. Drivers may not maintain responsibility for vehicle operation, may be unprepared to intervene as necessary, or may fail to recognize when Autosteer is canceled or not engaged. This increases the risk of a crash.
Tesla will release a free over-the-air (OTA) software update to address this issue. Owner notification letters were mailed on February 10, 2024. Owners can contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752, or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
