2024 Hyundai Palisade: Occupant Detection System May Deactivate Passenger Air Bags
The Occupant Detection System (ODS) in certain 2024 Hyundai Palisade vehicles may fail to detect occupants and deactivate the passenger-side front air bags. This increases the risk of injury during a crash in affected vehicles.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: Air bag sensor failure poses a crash-injury risk, but no injuries have been reported. Per the severity rubric, risk-of-harm products without reported injury score at most 3 (High).
Plain-English summary
Hyundai Motor America is recalling certain 2024 Palisade vehicles equipped with dark premium suede seats due to a defect in the Occupant Detection System (ODS). The ODS may fail to detect an occupant and consequently deactivate the passenger-side front air bags, causing these vehicles to not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
When the passenger-side front air bags are deactivated, they will not deploy as intended during a crash. This increases the risk of injury to vehicle occupants, particularly the front passenger, in the event of a collision.
Hyundai has identified approximately 63 vehicles as potentially affected. Owners of affected vehicles were notified by mail on September 26, 2023. The remedy involves a free software update to the ODS, which will be performed by authorized Hyundai dealers.
Owners should contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460 to arrange the software update. For additional information, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
