2023 Toyota RAV4 Recalled for Improperly Installed Tire Valve Stems
Gulf States Toyota is recalling 195 2023 Toyota RAV4 vehicles equipped with 17" black alloy wheels. The tire valve stems may be improperly installed or damaged, potentially causing air leakage, underinflation, and crash risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a safety-critical component defect (tire valve stem) that could lead to tire failure and crash risk. However, no injuries or illnesses have been reported, and the ultimate consequence (crash) remains theoretical rather than documented. Per the rubric, when no illnesses/injuries are reported and the hazard is theoretical, the score is at most 3 (High).
Plain-English summary
Gulf States Toyota, Inc. is recalling certain 2023 Toyota RAV4 vehicles equipped with 17" black alloy accessory wheels. During installation of these wheels, the tire valve stems may have been improperly installed or damaged. Additionally, the load carrying capacity label on these vehicles may display incorrect weight information. These vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110 (Tire Selection and Rims).
A damaged or improperly installed valve stem may allow air to leak from the tire and cause underinflation. Underinflated tires increase the risk of tire failure and loss of vehicle control, potentially resulting in a crash.
Approximately 195 vehicles are affected by this recall. Owner notification letters were mailed on August 18, 2023. Owners can contact Gulf States Toyota customer service at 1-800-444-1074 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 for more information.
Dealers will inspect the wheel valve stems and load carrying capacity labels at no cost to owners. If necessary, dealers will replace the valve stems and update the labels.
