Newmar motorhomes recalled for defective seat belt mounting brackets

Newmar is recalling certain 2019–2023 motorhomes because modified seat belt mounting brackets can fail to properly restrain occupants in a crash, violating federal safety standards.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: Seat belt bracket defects involve a safety-critical restraint system that fails to meet federal standards. However, no injuries or illnesses have been reported. Per the rubric, risk-of-harm recalls without reported injury score as High (3).

Plain-English summary

Newmar Corporation is recalling certain 2019–2023 Bay Star, Bay Star Sport, and Super Star motorhomes. The seat belt mounting brackets for the dinette seats were modified to avoid interfering with vehicle slide-out rollers in the floor. These modifications cause the vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards 210 (Seat Belt Assembly Anchorages) and 207 (Seating Systems).

The modified seat belt brackets can fail to properly restrain an occupant in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Newmar will replace the seat belt mounting brackets at no cost to owners. Owner notification letters were mailed on August 4, 2023. Owners can contact Newmar customer service at 1–800–731–8300 (Newmar recall number 604RSB) or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1–888–327–4236 (TTY: 1–800–424–9153).
