Plain-English summary
BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain 2023 2 Series Coupe vehicles, including the 230i, 230i XDrive, M240i, and M240i xDrive models. The recall involves the second-row seat backrest cover panels for the side air bags.
The defect is that these cover panels may break during the deployment of the side air bags. If a panel breaks, the air bag may deploy improperly, which increases the risk of injury to second-row seat occupants.
Dealers will replace the rear seat backrest side air bag cover panels free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on March 31, 2023. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
