2022-2023 Hyundai Elantra Airbag Emblem Detachment Safety Recall
Hyundai is recalling certain 2022-2023 Elantra vehicles due to an improperly welded driver's airbag cover emblem that may detach during deployment and strike occupants, increasing injury risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This is a structural vehicle defect involving an airbag component; however, no injuries have been reported, and the hazard is contingent on airbag deployment. Per the rubric, when no illnesses or injuries are reported and the hazard is theoretical, the maximum score is 3 (High).
Plain-English summary
Hyundai Motor America is recalling certain 2022 Elantra N and 2022-2023 Elantra vehicles. The emblem on the driver's front airbag cover may not have been properly welded, which can cause it to detach when the airbag deploys.
If the emblem detaches during airbag deployment, it may strike a vehicle occupant and increase the risk of injury.
To address this safety issue, Hyundai dealers will replace the driver's front airbag, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on October 14, 2022. Affected owners can contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460 to schedule service, or contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
