What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This is a confirmed structural vehicle defect (side-curtain air bags may not deploy properly), but no injuries or deaths have been reported. Per the rubric, risk-of-harm products without reported injury score at most 3 (High).

Plain-English summary

Ford is recalling certain 2022 Ford Maverick vehicles due to a defect in the side-curtain air bag system. The side-curtain air bags may not deploy properly in a crash, violating Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 226 (Ejection Mitigation).

If the air bags do not deploy properly, occupants may not be adequately protected during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Ford dealers will replace both the left and right side-curtain air bag modules with new designs at no cost to owners. Owner notification letters were mailed on January 30, 2023. Owners should contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 to schedule service. Those who wish to contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration can call the Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
