What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This recall addresses a fire hazard caused by electrical short-circuit in the transmission wiring system. Although no injuries or deaths have been reported, the potential for fire in vehicles poses a significant safety risk, meeting the criteria for High severity.
Plain-English summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC is recalling approximately 16,977 vehicles from 2019 to 2022 model years, including the AMG CLS53, AMG E53 (sedan, coupe, and cabriolet), AMG GT53, and AMG GT43. The transmission wiring harness in these vehicles may be misrouted, which can expose the electrical connector to corrosion.
When the electrical connector is exposed to corrosion, an electrical short-circuit can occur in the transmission wiring system. This short-circuit poses an increased risk of fire.
Dealers will inspect and repair the electrical connector, reroute the harness, and install an additional bracket at no charge to the owner. Owner notification letters were mailed on October 14, 2022. Owners should contact Mercedes-Benz USA customer service at 1-800-367-6372 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) for assistance.
