2022 Lincoln Aviator Engine Rails Defect Increases Crash Injury Risk
Ford is recalling certain 2022 Lincoln Aviator vehicles due to improperly heat-treated engine rails that may reduce structural protection in crashes and potentially detach while driving. Owners should contact Ford for a free inspection and replacement.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect in engine rails that fails to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards for crash protection and fuel system integrity. However, no injuries, deaths, or actual incidents have been reported, placing this at the high-risk level where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Ford Motor Company is recalling certain 2022 Lincoln Aviator vehicles due to improperly heat-treated engine rails. The engine rails in affected vehicles may not meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard requirements for occupant crash protection (FMVSS 208) and fuel system integrity (FMVSS 301).
Because of the improper heat treatment, these engine rails may not provide adequate structural protection in a crash, increasing the risk of injury to occupants. Additionally, an engine rail could potentially detach and contact the road while the vehicle is being driven, which could increase the risk of a crash.
Approximately 776 vehicles are potentially affected by this recall. Owner notification letters were mailed on August 22, 2022. Owners should contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 to schedule a free inspection. Dealers will perform an engine rail strength test and replace the rails if necessary at no cost. Owners whose vehicle requires replacement may also choose vehicle replacement or buyback options. Additional information is available from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or www.nhtsa.gov.
