Brake pressure switch corrosion in Arcimoto motorcycles may cause constant brake lights
Arcimoto Inc. is recalling certain 2019-2022 motorcycles because the brake pressure switch may corrode when exposed to salt and de-icer chemicals. Corroded switches cause brake lights to illuminate constantly, confusing other drivers and increasing crash risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The defect affects a brake system component and creates documented risk of driver confusion and increased crash potential. Although no injuries have been reported and the hazard is theoretical, the safety implications of a failed brake light indicator are significant. The defect does not fit the Score 2 criteria of labeling errors or precautionary recalls.
Plain-English summary
Arcimoto Inc. is recalling certain Deliverator (2020-2022), FUV (2019-2022), Rapid Responder (2021-2022), and Roadster (2020-2022) motorcycles. The brake pressure switch may corrode when exposed to salt and other chemicals found in road de-icers.
When the brake pressure switch corrodes, the brake lights remain illuminated continuously even when the brakes are not being applied. This defect can cause confusion to other drivers regarding when the motorcycle is actually braking, potentially increasing the risk of a crash.
Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to contact Arcimoto customer service at 1-541-683-6293 to schedule a service appointment. During service, the brake pressure switch will be inspected and dielectric grease will be applied to the connection to prevent further corrosion.
Owner notification letters were mailed on May 27, 2022.
