Spartan Fire Vehicles Recalled for Rear Axle Drive Pinion Fracture Risk

Marion Body Works is recalling 2021-2022 Spartan Fire vehicles because a rear axle drive pinion may fracture, potentially engaging the parking brake without warning and increasing crash risk.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (axle assembly) where a component fracture can lead to unintended parking brake engagement and increased crash risk, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Marion Body Works Inc. is recalling certain 2021-2022 Spartan Fire MetroStar, Gladiator, and MetroStar-RT vehicles. The recall involves vehicles equipped with Meritor 180 series drive pinions. The defect is located in the power train axle assembly.

The rear axle drive pinion may fracture. If this occurs, the fractured pinion may contact the brake drop hose. This contact can unintentionally engage the parking brake without the driver detecting it or without the brake lights activating, which increases the risk of a crash.

Owners of affected vehicles should contact Marion Body Works customer service at 1-715-754-5261. Meritor will inspect and replace the drive pinion, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on January 28, 2022. Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
