2021 Honda Accord automatic seat belt retractor may fail to lock
Honda is recalling certain 2021 Accord and other model vehicles because the automatic locking retractor on the second-row center seat belt may deactivate improperly, potentially leaving child restraints unsecured in a crash.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a risk-of-harm product (child restraint system safety) where no injuries have been reported, fitting the Score 3 (High) criterion. Although the defect affects a critical safety component, the absence of reported injuries and the lack of an explicit NHTSA Class I designation keep the score at 3 per the rule that recalls with no reported illnesses or injuries score at most 3.
Plain-English summary
Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2021 Accord sedan, Accord Hybrid, CR-V, Ridgeline, 2022 Insight, and 2022 CR-V Hybrid vehicles. The issue involves the automatic locking retractor on the second-row center seat belt assembly, which may deactivate improperly.
When the retractor deactivates improperly, the center seat belt cannot securely restrain a child safety seat. This creates a safety hazard because an unsecured child restraint system can increase the risk of injury during a crash. The vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208 (Occupant Crash Protection).
Honda is fixing the problem at no cost. Dealers will replace the second-row center seat belt assembly for affected vehicles. Owner notification letters were mailed on January 14, 2022. Owners can contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 for more information.
