Our severity reasoning: The source text explicitly states that the inflator explosion may result in 'serious injury or death,' which meets the rubric criteria for a Critical severity score.
Plain-English summary
General Motors, LLC is recalling certain 2009, 2010, and 2013 model year Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Escalade EXT, Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado 1500, Silverado 2500, Silverado 3500, Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Sierra 2500, Sierra 3500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles. The recall applies to vehicles originally sold or ever registered in specific U.S. states and territories, which are categorized into three geographic zones in the official notice.
The defect involves the front passenger airbag inflator module. If the airbag deploys, the inflator may explode, resulting in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. This hazard can result in serious injury or death.
GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger airbag inflator with an alternate one free of charge. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed on February 24, 2021, and owner notification letters were mailed on May 11, 2021. Owners may contact Cadillac, Chevrolet, or GMC customer service for more information.
