NHTSA safety advisory
Do not drive this vehicle
NHTSA advises owners to stop driving this vehicle until the recall repair has been completed.
This is the agency’s own advisory, not our assessment. Contact the manufacturer or a dealer, and see the official NHTSA notice for the current guidance.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The brake switch defect affects a critical vehicle safety component and increases the risk of crashes. However, the source contains no reports of actual injuries or deaths. This risk-of-harm situation in a safety-critical component justifies a High rating, but absent documented harm, does not meet the Severe or Critical threshold.
Plain-English summary
Yamaha is recalling certain motorcycle models from model years 2013 through 2021. The affected models include the FJR1300, MT10, XTZ12 (Super Ténéré), MTT9GT (Tracer GT), MXTGTKL (NIKEN GT), XV1900 (Star Venture), and XV1900B (Star Eluder). Approximately 18,203 motorcycles are affected.
The front brake switch in these motorcycles can fail due to increased resistance from silicon oxide. This defect can cause the brake light to remain on continuously and/or the cruise control system to shut off unexpectedly. Both situations increase the risk of a crash.
Owners are advised not to operate their motorcycles until the defect is repaired. Yamaha will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front brake switch free of charge. The recall began on January 20, 2021.
Owners may contact Yamaha customer service at 1-800-962-7926 (Yamaha recall number 990140). Alternatively, owners can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.safercar.gov.
