2021 Airstream Basecamp Trailers Recalled for Incorrect Tire Placard Information
Airstream is recalling certain 2021 Basecamp 16 trailers because the tire placard displays incorrect tire size and inflation pressure. If tires are inflated per the incorrect label, they could become dangerously underinflated, increasing crash risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This is a vehicle safety defect involving tire specification labeling that could lead to dangerous underinflation and increased crash risk. However, no deaths, injuries, or incidents have been reported, and the hazard is purely theoretical. Per the rubric, when no illnesses or injuries are reported and the hazard is theoretical, the maximum score is 3 (High).
Plain-English summary
Airstream, Inc. is recalling certain 2021 Basecamp 16 trailers due to incorrect information printed on the Federal Certification and Tire Placard. The placard displays tire size 255/55R18 with an inflation pressure of 50 PSI, when the correct specifications are ST225/75R15E tires with 80 PSI inflation pressure.
If owners inflate the tires according to the incorrect printed information, the tires will be underinflated. Underinflated tires can increase the risk of a crash. These vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards 110 (Tire Selection and Rims) and 567 (Certification).
Approximately 5 units are affected by this recall. Airstream will notify affected owners and install corrected labels at no cost. The recall began October 30, 2020.
