Engine harness defect may cause stalling in 2018–2021 Freightliner trucks
Engine harness wires may chafe and short in certain 2018–2021 Freightliner trucks, causing unexpected engine stalling that can increase crash risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: No injuries, deaths, or property damage are reported in the source. The hazard is theoretical, using conditional language ('may chafe', 'may short', 'can increase'). Per the rubric, this is a risk-of-harm scenario where no injury has been reported, which scores 3 (High).
Plain-English summary
Daimler Trucks North America LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain 2018–2021 Freightliner 114SD, 108SD, and Business Class M2 vehicles. Engine harness wires may chafe at various locations around the air compressor and frame rail.
When the wires chafe, they may short, causing the engine to stall without warning. An engine stall can increase the risk of a crash.
Approximately 9,665 vehicles are affected. DTNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the harness for adequate clearance and verify it has not been damaged. Vehicles with damaged harnesses will receive a new harness with severe duty wrapping and additional hardware, at no cost to owners. The recall began October 28, 2020. For more information, owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
