BMW Recalls 328d Vehicles for Driveline Joint Defect

The recall involves a constant-velocity joint that transfers power between the transfer case and the rear drive shaft. This component may become damaged, which can result in a loss of power to the rear wheels.
A loss of power to the rear wheels can affect vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, if the vehicle is parked after losing rear power and the parking brake is not engaged, unintended rollaway can occur, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the constant-velocity joint and inspect the transfer case, replacing it if necessary, free of charge. The recall began May 22, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
