Dennis Eagle Recalls 2017 Diego Vehicles for Electrical System Defect

Dennis Eagle is recalling one 2017 Diego vehicle because a switch failure may cause instrument controls to move sides and disable the electronic braking system.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where the Electronic Braking System may be disabled and brake lights may fail to illuminate, increasing the risk of a crash, which aligns with the 'High' severity criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.

Plain-English summary

Dennis Eagle Inc. is recalling one 2017 Dennis Eagle Diego vehicle due to a defect in the electrical system, specifically the instrument cluster and panel. The recall addresses a potential failure of the changeover switch while the vehicle is being driven from the right-hand side (RHS). If this failure occurs, the instrument cluster and throttle controls may switch to the left-hand side (LHS).

Additionally, if a passenger presses the brake pedal during this failure, the Electronic Braking System (EBS) will be disabled, and the brake lights may not illuminate. These conditions cause the vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) numbers 101, "Controls and Displays," and 121, "Air Brake Systems." The removal of the cluster display and throttle control, along with the loss of brake lights, may increase the risk of a crash.

Dennis Eagle has notified the owner, and a dealer will update the LHS and RHS instrument cluster and the brake line pressure switch free of charge. The recall began on August 12, 2019. Owners may contact Dennis Eagle customer service at 1-813-440-8136 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
