What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (tires) where incorrect markings increase the risk of a crash, but no injuries or fatalities have been reported.

Plain-English summary

Trans Texas Tire (TTT) is recalling 560 Contender 5.70-8 tires that were sold exclusively through Discount Tire stores. The recall addresses a defect where the tire sidewalls are incorrectly labeled, with each side of the tire potentially displaying different PLY and PSI markings. This labeling error causes the tires to fail to comply with the requirements of 49 CFR Part 574, "Tire Identification & Recordkeeping."

The incorrect PLY and PSI markings may result in underinflating or overloading the tires, which increases the risk of a crash. The recall began on May 2, 2019.

TTT will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected tires with tires that have the correct sidewall markings, free of charge. Owners may contact Trans Texas Tire customer service at 1-903-572-0267. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
