Continental Recalls Tires with Missing Identification Markings
Continental Tire is recalling specific General Altimax RT43 tires because they lack required identification markings, which could hinder future recall efforts.
What this means for you
Minor labeling or packaging issue, or a voluntary precautionary recall. Risk of harm is low but real — follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Our severity reasoning: The recall addresses a compliance and labeling defect (missing TIN) rather than an immediate mechanical failure or reported injury, fitting the criteria for moderate severity involving minor labeling or documentation issues.
Plain-English summary
Continental Tire the Americas, LLC is recalling certain General Altimax RT43 tires in size 175/65R14 82T. These tires contain a tire identification number (TIN) that is missing the 3-digit plant code and the 6-symbol manufacturer's identification mark. As a result, these tires fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 574, "Tire Identification & Recordkeeping."
The missing identification information can make it difficult for tire owners to identify the tire in the event of a future recall. This increases the risk that owners might continue driving with a recalled tire, which could potentially result in a crash.
Dealers will replace the affected tires free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on April 3, 2023. Owners may contact Continental Tire's customer service at 1-888-799-2168 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
