What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (transmission control module) that can cause loss of vehicle control and increase the risk of a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Aisin World Corp. of America (Aisin AW) is recalling certain Transmission Control Modules (TCM) sold for use in 2016-2019 Mazda Miata MX-5 and 2017-2019 Fiat 124 vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions. The affected part numbers are PSPD189E1, PEFB189E1B, PAC6189E1A, PEFB189E1A, PEFB189E1C, 50052911, PEFB189E1D, 50053305, and 50054938.

Due to incorrect programming of the Transmission Control Module, certain conditions may cause the vehicle to unexpectedly downshift and abruptly decelerate. If a vehicle downshifts unexpectedly, the driver may lose control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of crash.

Remedy programs will be conducted by both Mazda and FCA US. Owners may contact Mazda or FCA US for additional information, or contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
