Forest River Recalls 2014-2019 Trailers Due to Brake Safety Switch Wiring Defect
Forest River is recalling 2014-2019 recreational trailers because a wiring defect may prevent brakes from engaging if the trailer detaches from the tow vehicle.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where trailer brakes may fail to engage upon detachment, creating a significant risk of crash and injury.
Plain-English summary
Forest River, Inc. is recalling certain 2014-2019 Forest River Salem, Wildcat Maxx, Wildwood, Vibe, and Rainier recreational trailers. The recall involves a defect in the electrical system where the break-away safety switch may not have been wired to a constant power source.
As a result of this wiring issue, the switch may be inadvertently disconnected from the trailer house battery. If this occurs, the trailer brakes may not engage if the trailer detaches from the tow vehicle, which increases the risk of a crash.
Forest River will notify owners, and dealers will install a new wiring harness to reroute the wiring free of charge. The recall began on September 25, 2018. Owners may contact Forest River customer service at 1-503-831-5410 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
