What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (wiring corrosion) that explicitly increases the risk of fire and crashes, meeting the criteria for a Severe (4) rating.
Plain-English summary
Ford Motor Company is recalling certain 2015-2017 Ford Transit vehicles equipped with a trailer tow module. The recall involves 25,658 vehicles. The defect occurs when water enters the tow modules, which can corrode the wiring. This corrosion may cause rapidly flashing turn signals, loss of the instrument panel display, electrical shorts, or the unintended deployment of seatbelt pretensioners.
The primary safety risks associated with this defect are an increased risk of fire due to electrical shorts and an increased risk of a crash due to turn signal, instrument cluster, or seatbelt pretensioner malfunctions. This action is an expansion of a previous recall (17V-668 / 17S34).
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will correct the issue by adding a drainage hole in the driver's door stepwell and incorporating a fuse into the vehicle's wiring harness at no charge. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
