BMW Recalls Vehicles for Electric Water Pump Fire Risk
BMW is recalling 2007-2012 models because a failing electric auxiliary water pump can overheat the circuit board, increasing the risk of a fire.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (engine cooling system) that explicitly increases the risk of a fire, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain 2007-2012 BMW, MINI, and Rolls-Royce vehicles due to a defect in the electric auxiliary water pump. The affected models include the BMW 550i, 750i, 760Li, X5, X6, ActiveHybrid 7, and 650i; MINI Cooper S, John Cooper Works (JCW), and Countryman variants; and the Rolls-Royce Ghost.
The electric auxiliary water pump may fail, which can cause the associated circuit board to overheat. If the circuit board overheats, it can increase the risk of a fire. BMW recommends that owners park their vehicles outdoors until the recall remedy has been performed.
Dealers will replace the electric auxiliary water pump free of charge. Owners will be notified of the recall beginning June 11, 2018, and will receive a second notification when remedy parts become available, as parts availability is currently limited. Owners may contact BMW, MINI, or Rolls-Royce customer service for more information.
