Mercedes-Benz Recalls Vehicles Due to Electric Power Steering Water Ingress
Mercedes-Benz is recalling specific 2016-2017 models because an insufficiently sealed electric power steering connector may allow water to enter the control unit, potentially deactivating steering assist.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (steering system) where the loss of power steering assist increases the risk of a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC. is recalling certain 2016-2017 model year vehicles, including the GL350, GLE63S, GLE300d, GLE350d, GLE550e, GL550, GLE350, GL450, E400, AMG GLE43, GL63, AMG GLE63, E300, GLE400, and AMG GLS63. The recall involves 58,323 vehicles.
The affected vehicles have an electric power steering connector that may be insufficiently sealed. This defect allows water to enter the power steering control unit. If water enters the unit, the power steering assist may be deactivated, which increases the risk of a crash.
Mercedes-Benz will notify owners, and dealers will replace the connector and inspect the electric power steering rack, replacing the rack as necessary. These repairs will be performed free of charge. Remedy parts are currently unavailable, and interim notices informing owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed June 30, 2017. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
