What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (windshield separation) that increases the risk of injury in a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC is recalling certain 2016 GLE350 4Matic and GLS 450 4Matic vehicles. The recall addresses a defect where the windshield bonding may be insufficient. As a result, the windshield may separate from the vehicle in a crash. These vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection," and number 212, "Windshield Mounting."
If the windshield detaches during a crash, the passenger frontal air bag may not be supported properly after it deploys. This condition increases the risk of injury to occupants.
Mercedes-Benz USA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the windshield free of charge. The recall began in March 2017. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
