The defect involves the seat's ability to protect a child in a crash when installed in the forward-facing position and secured using only the lap belt, without the top tether. In this specific configuration, the seat may not adequately protect the child, resulting in an increased risk of chest injury. These seats fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 213, "Child Restraint Systems."

Diono began the recall on November 22, 2017. The company will notify owners and provide a free remedy kit containing an updated instruction manual, an energy-absorbing pad, and a new chest clip.
