Forest River Recalls 2017 Puma Trailers for Incorrect Federal Tire Placards
Forest River is recalling 2017 Puma trailers because incorrect Federal placards list wrong tire and rim information, which could lead to under-inflation and increased crash risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where the defect (incorrect placard) could lead to tire under-inflation and increased crash risk, but no injuries or illnesses have been reported in the source text.
Plain-English summary
Forest River, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2017 Puma trailers, specifically models PT38DBS and PT38RLQ, manufactured between August 15, 2016, and November 15, 2016. The recall involves 23 affected vehicles.
The Federal placards on these vehicles contain incorrect tire and rim information. The placards incorrectly state that the vehicles use ST225/75R15/D tires requiring 65 PSI and have 15X6.0JJ rims. In reality, the vehicles are equipped with ST235/80R/16E tires requiring 80 PSI and have 16X6.0JJ rims. This discrepancy means the vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
If an operator relies on the incorrect information provided on the Federal placard, they may under-inflate the tires. Under-inflation can reduce vehicle handling and increase the risk of a crash. Forest River will notify owners, and dealers will replace the incorrect Federal placard with a correct one at no charge. The recall began on January 4, 2017. Owners may contact Forest River customer service at 1-574-642-0606 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
