Jaguar Recalls 2009-2011 XF Models for Air Bag Inflator Rupture Risk

Jaguar is recalling 2009-2011 XF vehicles in specific states because passenger air bag inflators may rupture during a crash, potentially causing serious injury or death.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The source text explicitly states that an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking occupants, resulting in serious injury or death. This aligns with the rubric criterion for 'significant injury/property-damage reports' or structural vehicle defects involving serious injury risk.

Plain-English summary

Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC is recalling certain model year 2009-2011 Jaguar XF vehicles. This recall applies only to vehicles originally sold or ever registered in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Vehicles not originally sold or ever registered in these specific jurisdictions are not subject to this safety recall.

The affected vehicles are equipped with certain passenger frontal air bag inflator modules, either as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front air bags, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling. An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.

Jaguar will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag assemblies free of charge. The recall began in March 2017. Owners may contact Jaguar Land Rover customer service at 1-800-452-4827. Jaguar's number for this recall is J069. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
