Spartan Motors is recalling 89 Utilimaster Aeromaster vehicles because a wiring defect may leave the lift gate system powered, posing an injury risk to maintenance personnel.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where injury has not yet been reported, specifically posing a risk to maintenance personnel due to an energized lift gate system.

Plain-English summary

Spartan Motors USA is recalling certain model year 2012-2015 Utilimaster Aeromaster vehicles manufactured between November 5, 2013, and March 31, 2016. The recall affects 89 vehicles in total.

The push-to-trip circuit breaker for the lift gate system may have been improperly wired. As a result, the lift gate system may remain powered even after the circuit breaker has been pushed. This defect increases the risk of personal injury to maintenance personnel who may be unaware that the system is still energized.

Spartan will notify owners, and dealers will move and properly install the push-to-trip breaker on the driver's side of the vehicle free of charge. The recall began on June 8, 2016. Owners may contact Spartan customer service at 1-800-543-5008 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
