The affected inflators were installed as original equipment or as replacement equipment after a vehicle crash.
This recall addresses vehicles ever registered in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands. If an inflator ruptures, metal fragments may strike the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death. Vehicles registered outside of these states may be covered by recalls 16E-043 or 16E-044.
Takata notified original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) on May 16, 2016, and is working with them to determine which vehicles contain the affected inflators. As this work progresses, numerous vehicle recalls will likely be announced by the impacted vehicle manufacturers.
