Plain-English summary
Takata Corporation is recalling certain PSPI, PSPI-1.1, PSPI-2, PSPI 6, PSPI-L, and SPI air bag inflators that were assembled as part of frontal air bag modules. These inflators were used as original equipment or as replacement equipment in vehicles. The recall specifically addresses vehicles that have ever been registered in Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
The defect involves the potential for the inflators to rupture due to propellant degradation. This degradation can occur after long-term exposure to lower absolute humidity, temperature, and temperature cycling. If an inflator ruptures, metal fragments may be released, which could strike the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.
Takata is working with vehicle manufacturers to determine which vehicles had these affected inflators installed. As this process progresses, vehicle manufacturers are expected to announce specific recalls for the impacted vehicles. Takata notified the original equipment manufacturers on May 16, 2016. Owners of vehicles registered outside of the listed states may be covered by separate recalls 16E-042 or 16E-043. Consumers should monitor the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website or contact the Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 for updates.
