Plain-English summary
Takata (TK Global LLC) is recalling certain PSPI, PSPI-1.1, PSPI-2, PSPI-6, PSPI-L, and SPI air bag inflators used in frontal air bag modules. These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation caused by long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling. The recall covers model year 2014 and newer vehicles ever registered in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death. Takata is working with vehicle manufacturers to determine which vehicles have the affected inflators installed as original or replacement equipment. As this work progresses, numerous vehicle recalls will likely be announced by the impacted vehicle manufacturers.
The recall began on January 2, 2019. Owners may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.safercar.gov for more information. Vehicles registered outside of the listed states may be covered by recalls 19E-002 or 19E-003.
