Ford Recalls 2010-2011 Fusion and Mercury Milan for Fuel Leak Risk
Ford is recalling 2010-2011 Fusion and Mercury Milan vehicles because fuel vapor canister purge valves may fail, causing fuel tank cracks and leaks that increase fire risk.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect in the fuel system that can lead to fuel leaks and fire, which aligns with the rubric criteria for 'structural vehicle defect' or 'significant injury/property-damage reports' (fire risk).
Plain-English summary
Ford Motor Company is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 Ford Fusion vehicles manufactured between July 21, 2008, and March 4, 2011, and 2010-2011 Mercury Milan vehicles manufactured between July 23, 2008, and December 10, 2010. The recall involves approximately 411,205 vehicles.
The affected vehicles have fuel vapor canisters with purge valves that may not operate properly. This malfunction can result in abnormal pressure changes within the fuel tank. These pressure changes may cause the tank to crack and leak fuel. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will update the vehicle powertrain control modules, inspect for diagnostic trouble codes, and perform a leak test on the Canister Purge Valve. The fuel tank will be inspected for cracks, and the valve and tank will be replaced as necessary. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
