Ford Recalls 2016 Fusion and Lincoln MKZ for Fuel Tank Defect

Ford is recalling 2016 Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles because fuel tanks may have insufficient wall thickness, posing a fire risk if cracked in a crash.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (fuel tank integrity) that increases the risk of fire, which aligns with the rubric criteria for a Severe (4) rating.

Plain-English summary

Ford Motor Company is recalling certain model year 2016 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles. The affected vehicles were manufactured between September 3, 2015, and September 13, 2015 for the Fusion, and between September 3, 2015, and September 12, 2015 for the MKZ.

The fuel tanks in these vehicles may have insufficient wall thickness. As a result, the tanks may crack in the event of a crash, causing the vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 301, "Fuel System Integrity." A cracked fuel tank may leak fuel, increasing the risk of a fire.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel tank free of charge. The recall began on October 19, 2015. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
