Spartan MetroStar Emergency Vehicles Recalled for Transmission Defect

Spartan is recalling 2014 MetroStar emergency vehicles because the K-Gearbox transmission may unexpectedly shift to neutral, increasing crash risk.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (transmission shifting to neutral) that explicitly increases the risk of a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Spartan Motors USA is recalling certain model year 2014 MetroStar emergency vehicles manufactured between January 5, 2015, and March 9, 2015. The recall affects vehicles equipped with a fire pump and a Hale Products K-Gearbox.

The K-Gearbox transmission in the affected vehicles may unexpectedly shift to neutral while the vehicle is traveling to or from a fire. If this occurs, the delay may hinder firefighting efforts, and the loss of drive may increase the risk of a crash.

Spartan will notify owners, and dealers will remove the gearbox, send it to Hale for repairs, and reinstall it once fixed. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on November 3, 2015. Owners may contact Spartan customer service at 1-800-867-6478 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
